The latest NHS figures have confirmed that waiting lists have reached a staggering 6.5 million. This is a record high and represents one in nine people in the population.
Although NHS Trusts are working hard to improve this situation, the figures show that one in twenty people have waited for over a year for treatment. These treatments range from general eye surgery to hip and knee replacements, and some patients are getting so desperate that they are funding their own care in the private sector.
Whilst waiting for treatment, many people are unable to continue in employment and require care from family members, and this has a huge impact on all of those involved and to the wider economy.
The latest figures show that there is evidence that some waiting lists are improving, so hopefully there is now light at the end of the tunnel for patients and their care providers.
Sometimes there are avoidable delays in treatment, such as the failure to correctly refer for further treatment, the failure to correctly monitor or due to due to an admin error.
